It happened again. My fifth grader, Jean Marie, pulled out his homework today when he got home from school. "Time for Kids" is the magazine of choice for schools these days. My son gets them every week. They have current events and good information that challenges their critical thinking skills. I got home from taking my oldest son to soccer practice, and this issue was sitting on my counter:
People.
Click HERE to watch a one minute video.
This is ONE article about ONE parasite. The video explains that they had to explain to the people that filtering the water "through a fine cloth" would strip the fleas of the eggs that will birth the parasite, but that it won't protect them from bacteria and viruses in the water. No small amount of education proceeds water contamination education to these remote people of the earth. The article "A Smart Solution" written by Suzanne Nimbler, explains "Many did not want to believe that the water they were so grateful to have was making them sick. 'We had to show through a magnifying glass the little creatures swimming around in the water that had the Guinea-worm eggs in them,' says Carter."
I have gagged no less than three times writing this post.
Wait...four.
Water is one of our very basic needs. The lack of access to clean water produces a desperate situation where people are willing to drink filthy water that is laden with disease. I can't even fathom that.
I flush water down the toilet.
Did you know that the United States uses the most water per person in the entire world? No?
SIX HUNDRED SIXTY THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED THIRTY GALLONS...
...PER
...PERSON.
...every year.
"And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." ~Micah 6:8
